G. Gruet & Fils is a champagne cooperative based in Bethon (Sézannais, Marne), founded in 1967 by Gilbert Gruet under the name Union Vinicole des Coteaux de Bethon. The house is known for its focus on Chardonnay, which covers about 80% of its 115-120 hectares of vineyards, with Pinot Noir as the second grape.
History
The cooperative was founded to unite local winegrowers and was led by Gilbert Gruet until his death in 1999. Today the cooperative has about 100 members and 7 permanent employees. The current president is Jean-Yves Orcin. The brand name G. Gruet & Fils honoured the founder and is used for commercial sales.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards lie in the Sézannais, a region known for its chalky, limestone-rich soils. This terroir gives the Chardonnay grapes a distinctive minerality and freshness. The site lies about 15 km from Sézanne, on the southern edge of the Champagne appellation.
Winemaking
G. Gruet & Fils uses the méthode champenoise and carries out all production steps itself, from pressing and vinification to disgorging and bottling. The cooperative has a pressing centre renovated in 2021 and is moving towards sustainable viticulture (HVE/VDC certifications). The grapes come exclusively from its own members and are processed locally to preserve the typicity of the terroir.
Champagnes
The range includes several cuvées, among them:
- Brut Blanc de Blancs: A pure Chardonnay champagne, typical of the region.
- Brut Grande Réserve: A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir (often 70% Pinot Noir in some editions), fruity and balanced.
- Rosé: A brut rosé champagne.
- Demi-Sec: A sweeter style to go with desserts.
- Millésimé: Vintage champagnes, such as the 2016 Blanc de Blancs.
- La Part des Anges: A limited edition of Blanc de Blancs, partly aged in oak barrels.
The cooperative also offers services such as grape pressing for members, home delivery and tastings in its wine cellar.
