Champagne Edmond Bourdelat is a family business based in Brugny-Vaudancourt (51530) on the coteaux sud d'Épernay, founded in the 1970s by Edmond Bourdelat and run since 1996 by his son Bruno and Bruno's wife Sandrine.
History and Ownership
The family already owned some vines; Edmond officially launched the champagne house, after which Bruno took over the estate in 1996 (some sources give 1990 as the start of his involvement). The estate covers 5 hectares and is recognised with the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and VDC (Viticulture Durable en Certifiée) labels. Bruno Bourdelat describes his philosophy as a continuous learning process in which the champagnes challenge him to perform.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyard area is 5 hectares spread over 24 plots in Brugny, Mancy and Vinay.
- Grape varieties: The blend is dominated by Pinot Meunier (up to 60-80% in certain cuvées), supplemented with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- Terroir: The soil consists of limestone (Bartonian, Campanian), lignite clay (Sparnacian), marl (Thanetian) and sand.
- Harvest: The vineyards are harvested by hand; the average age of the vines is about 35 years.
Method
Vinification combines modern technology with traditional methods:
- Fermentation: The must is fermented in thermostatic stainless steel cuves.
- Élevage: A significant share of the champagnes ages in oak barrels (fûts), which contributes to complexity and texture. The champagnes stay in the cellar for at least 3 years.
- Techniques: Malolactic fermentation is used for white wines, ice disgorgement (dégorgement à la glace) for removing the lees, and the wine is filtered but not fined.
- Visitors: The estate offers visits and tastings (duration approx. 120 minutes), possible in English and French, for groups of up to 60 people.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The range varies from year to year, but is characterised by low dosages and oak ageing:
- Cuvée de Réserve: A blend of several years, often rich in Pinot Meunier (up to 70-80%) and Chardonnay, known for its finesse and fruitiness.
- Prestige / Blanc de Blancs: Often dominated by Chardonnay (60%+), with oak ageing (30% in barrels), and characterised by aromas of yellow fruit, pear and peach.
- Rosé: A blend of Meunier (80%) and Chardonnay, in which part of the red wine has been aged in barrels.
- Narcose-60: A special cuvée whose bottles were temporarily kept at a depth of 60 metres off the Île d'Yeu, which gives a unique minerality and pressure development.
- Extra Brut: Known for its fresh, mineral profile and low sugar content, with aromas of ripe fruit and compote.
