Demière Ansiot is a small, family-run champagne house located in Oger (Côte des Blancs), a Grand Cru village in the Marne, France. The estate is run by Nicolas Demière, the fourth generation winemaker, who carries out production entirely in-house.
History and Ownership
- Founded in 1970, when the estate was still part of a cooperative.
- Since 1981 it has been an independent Récoltant-Manipulant (a winegrower who makes his own wine), giving it full control over production.
- Production is approximately 30,000 bottles a year, which makes it a small, artisanal house.
Vineyards and Terroir
- The estate owns 8.5 hectares of vineyards, entirely classified Grand Cru.
- The vineyards lie in Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, areas known for their chalky soils.
- The soils contain a lot of belemnite chalk, a rare type that provides optimal water supply and a slow, steady ripening of the grapes.
- The wines are 100% Chardonnay (Blanc de Blancs). The average age of the vines is 40 years.
Approach and Vinification
- The vines are grown with respect for the environment; the estate follows organic practices and is certified to the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) standards.
- After the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation is avoided to preserve freshness and minerality.
- The wines age sur lie (on the yeast) for at least 6 years before being disgorged.
- The use of a liqueur de tirage made from its own still wine ensures a controlled and pure finish.
Champagnes and Profile
- The champagnes are known for their minerality, elegance and complex aromas of citrus fruits, white flowers and yeast.
- Important cuvées include the Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru (non-vintage) and the Millesimé Grand Cru Brut (vintage wine).
- A special Cuvée Neyrot is also produced, from a plot of 0.4 hectares with vines planted in 1947.
- The wine style is generally Brut (6-12 g/l residual sugar) or Extra Brut, with an alcohol content of around 12-12.5%.
