History The Delouvin family, originally from Vandières, has been active in winegrowing and carpentry since the 16th century. The champagne house Delouvin-Nowack was officially launched in 1949, after the marriage of Bertrand Delouvin’s parents, although the family had been marketing champagne since around 1930. Geoffrey Delouvin took over the legacy of his father Bertrand and currently runs the estate, combining traditional knowledge with modern, respectful winegrowing methods.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate owns approximately 7.25 hectares of vineyard, located in the Marne Valley around the commune of Vandières (51700). The soil consists of a mix of Lutetian limestone, Bartonian limestone and Sparnacian clay. The vineyards are mainly planted with Pinot Meunier (the dominant variety, up to 95% in some sources), complemented by small plots of Chardonnay (up to 5-10%) and a few trial plots of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Petit Meslier. The vineyards lie on south-east-facing slopes and consist largely of old vines.
Approach Delouvin Nowack follows controlled organic farming (organic conversion), with no herbicides or insecticides used. The soil is worked by ploughing and grass cover (enherbement) to respect soil life. In vinification malolactic fermentation is blocked to preserve natural freshness and fruitiness. The champagnes undergo a long ageing on the laths (sur latte), often longer than the legal minimum period, and are disgorged by ice disgorgement (freezing) at -20°C to -25°C. Dosages are generally low to emphasise terroir expression.
Champagnes and Cuvées The range includes various expressions that emphasise the preference for Pinot Meunier:
- Fauve (2013): A brut nature with 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, rated 91/100 points.
- Semper Fidelis: A blanc de noirs of 100% Pinot Meunier (93/100 points).
- Meunier Perpétuel: A wine that ages partly according to the Solera method, with a mix of harvests from 1992 to 2019 (90/100 points).
- Extra Sélection: A cuvée consisting mainly of Chardonnay (up to 90%) and Pinot Meunier.
- Carte d'Or and Carte Rubis: A blanc de noirs of Pinot Meunier and a rosé of Pinot Meunier respectively.
Visitors can visit the estate at 29 rue Principale, 51700 Vandières, where tastings and tours of the vineyards and cellars are possible.
