Champagne Daniel Caillez is an independent winegrowing business based in Damery (Marne), on the right bank of the river Marne, only 6 km from Épernay. The house is defined by the transition from traditional craftsmanship to modern precision under the second generation.
History and Heritage The business was founded in 1977 by Daniel Caillez, from a family of winegrowers. After his retirement in 2003 his son Vincent Caillez took the helm. Vincent combines the classic Champagne vineyards and traditions with a modern vision of vinification and business management. The company is legally registered as an SARL (Société à responsabilité limitée).
Vineyards and Terroir The wine-growing area covers 5.6 hectares of slopes in the Marne valley, specifically on the terroirs of Damery and Vauciennes. The vineyards are owned exclusively by the house and are worked with an eye for the environment. The grapes consist of the three traditional Champagne varieties:
- Pinot Meunier (the dominant variety, fitting the Damery terroir)
- Pinot Noir
- Chardonnay
All grapes are 100% from the estate's own property, which ensures full control over the quality of the raw materials.
Approach and Production The champagnes are produced according to the traditional method (méthode champenoise). Vincent Caillez emphasises a balance between historical techniques and modern innovation. Vinification includes both standard cellar processes and specific techniques such as ageing in oak barrels (for the Héritage cuvée) and bottling under cork. The house regularly offers cellar visits and tastings to the public, with the wines presented in a welcoming setting.
Champagnes and Cuvées The range includes various styles that reflect the versatility of the terroir, including:
- Première: A non-dosé brut of 100% Pinot Meunier. Characterised by a full mousse and aromas of juicy fruit (apple, pear, peach), dried flowers and ripe wheat. Suitable as an aperitif or with dessert.
- Référence: A blend of 50% Pinot Meunier, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. This is an elegant, selected cuvée that was praised in the Sommeliers International review as "a great, fine and elegant wine".
- Millésime: A vintage of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir with a lively mousse and golden reflections.
- Héritage: A unique cuvée of equal parts of the three varieties, vinified in oak barrels and aged for three years. This wine shows ripe aromas of honey, damson plum, candied orange and roasted nuts. This too was highly rated in Sommeliers International.
