Champagne Coqueret Bénard is an independent champagne house (Vignerons Indépendants) with a rich history going back to the beginning of the 19th century in the village of Boursault. The current owners, Anne and Julien, run the family business, which is now five generations strong, with its roots in the work of Pierre-Augustin Bénard and later his grandson Raoul, who took over a vineyard in Mareuil-sur-Ay after the Second World War.
The vineyard area is approximately 6 hectares, spread over the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and the Vallée de la Marne. The grapes are mainly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay (and to a lesser extent Meunier), grown on chalky soils in a UNESCO-recognised protected area. The viticulture is raisonnée (a sustainable, controlled approach) and the harvest is by hand.
Vinification follows the traditional méthode champenoise in stainless steel tanks (cuves), with a minimum ageing of 3 years in the cellar (above the legal 15 months). The house is known for the Brut Tradition, a Premier Cru champagne with elegant Chardonnay aromas, produced with full control over the process from grape to bottle.
Main features:
- Location: Headquarters in Ludes (51500) and a showroom in Épernay (42 Avenue Paul Chandon).
- Visit: Visitors are welcome at the Cellier aux Lys (in Louis XIII style) for tours, tastings and information about the production process.
- Accommodation: The house also offers the Relais Coq Lys, a renovated 19th-century typical champagne house in Mareuil-sur-Ay for stays.
- Production: Approximately 25,000 bottles a year, with an emphasis on quality and traditional elegance.
