Château de Bligny is the only champagne house in the region allowed to use the title "Château" as a Récoltant-Manipulant (rampoenier), located in Bligny, Côte des Bar. The history begins in 1773, when the Marquis de Dampierre bought the estate on the foundations of a medieval castle, initially for hunting. After a period of decline and changes of ownership, including a crucial role for Baron de Cachard in the 19th century, who rebuilt the vineyard area, the estate was taken over in 1999 by the Rapeneau family, who carried out a major restoration and revival of production.
The vineyards cover 30 hectares and are certified Haute Valeur Environnementale level 3. The grape varieties are mainly Pinot Noir (60%) and Chardonnay (30%), complemented by Meunier. A unique feature is the Clos du Château, a walled vineyard with seven permitted Champagne grape varieties (including Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc), which is rare in Champagne. Production takes place entirely at the château, using a traditional press centre and a modern inox cuverie.
The champagnes are known for their minerality, freshness and elegance. Some notable cuvées are:
- Clos du Château: A complex blend of seven grape varieties, often as Brut Nature.
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay, with aromas of acacia and citrus.
- Grande Réserve: A balance of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with fruity and floral notes.
- Grand Rosé: A soft rosé with aromas of red berries and rose, dominated by Pinot Noir.
The château has been open to the public since 1999 and has an impressive collection of historic champagne glasses, including works by Lalique and Daum, which refer to the former crystal factory in Bligny.
