Champagne Castelger is a family business located in Vauciennes (51480), in the Marne, on the north-eastern slope of the Vallée de la Marne near Épernay. The house is run by Florence, Nicolas and Virginie and, besides champagnes, also offers chambres d'hôtes (guest accommodation).
History
The business has been a family affair for five generations. The grapes are grown on 9 hectares of vineyard located exclusively within the territory of Vauciennes. The vineyards are HVE-certified (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and the average age of the vines is 40 years.
Vineyards and Approach
The vineyards have a semi-continental climate and clay-limestone soils. The grape harvest is by hand and the grapes are grown in a balanced way. The main grape varieties are:
- Meunier: 46%
- Chardonnay: 44%
- Pinot Noir: 10%
Vinification follows the traditional méthode champenoise, with the wine ageing on the lees/laths (in bottles). The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks (cuves).
Champagnes
Castelger produces a range of eight champagnes, including:
- L'Ancestrale 2018
- Cuvée La Trilogie
- Chardonnay / Blanc de Blancs
- La Gourmandise
- Blanc de Noirs
- Magnum L'Authentique
- Zero Dosage
- Rosé de Saignée
Visitors can visit the cellars for a tour and tasting, and can buy champagnes directly in the shop at 10 rue Henri Martin. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 9h-12h and 14h-17h30, and Saturday 9h-12h and 14h-16h. On Sunday the house is open from 9h-12h.
