Champagne Boulard-Bauquaire is an independent wine house in Cormicy (20 km from Reims), run by Christophe Boulard, the 8th generation of the family, which has been active since around 1960. The estate combines centuries-old traditions with modern, sustainable techniques.
History and Philosophy
- The Boulard family has been growing grapes with passion and care for generations.
- Christophe Boulard represents the eighth generation and attaches great importance to personal hospitality and transparency.
- The house is recognised as a Vigneron Indépendant, which means they do everything themselves: from harvest to bottling and sales.
Vineyards and Terroir
- The estate manages approximately 8 hectares of vineyard, divided over three zones: the Massif de Saint-Thierry, the Vallée de la Marne and the Montagne de Reims.
- The land in Cormicy has a unique sandy subsoil on a chalky base, which gives specific aromas to the wines.
- The grape varieties are Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%) and Pinot Meunier (30%).
- Production is approximately 70,000 bottles per year.
Approach and Sustainability
- The estate is certified under the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) and Viticulture Durable en Champagne (VDC) labels.
- Winemaking is fully sustainable: no insecticides are used, grass is planted to reduce herbicides, and organic methods are applied.
- Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, but some cuvées (such as Mélanie) are vinified in oak barrels.
- The bottles rest quietly on their sides in dark, cool cellars for several years.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The offering includes six main-line cuvées:
- Brut Tradition: A fresh, fruity and balanced base (40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir, 20% Pinot Meunier).
- Carte Noire: A Blanc de Noirs (50% Pinot Noir, 50% Pinot Meunier).
- Vieilles Vignes: A Blanc de Blancs of 100% Chardonnay from old vines (Premier Cru).
- Grande Réserve: A balanced blend of 33% each of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Brut Rosé: Made using the saignée method (85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir), with fresh red fruit notes.
- Cuvée Mélanie: A tribute to the great-grandmother; a 100% Chardonnay from old vines, aged 5 years in oak barrels, with honey, confit and exotic aromas.
