Champagne Barnaut is an independent champagne house in Bouzy, a Grand Cru village in the Montagne de Reims, founded in 1874 by Edmond Barnaut. The house is currently run by Philippe, Guillaume and Laurette Secondé, who represent the fifth and sixth generations respectively. The philosophy combines centuries-old tradition with modern precision, with the aim of preserving the pure expression of the terroir.
The vineyards cover approximately 16.5 hectares, located exclusively within the boundaries of the Grand Cru Bouzy. The soil is argilo-calcaire and the vines have an average age of 25 years, with a predominance of Pinot Noir (approximately 60%) and Chardonnay (30%). The vines are managed according to HVE3 certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and lutte raisonnée (integrated pest management), with grazing applied to promote soil health and allow the vines to grow older.
Barnaut's approach focuses on minimising intervention: vines are not removed but replaced in order to strengthen the root systems, and a natural and simple expression of the terroir is chosen without artificial additives. Philippe Secondé, an oenologist by training, emphasises respect for nature and avoids trends in order to guarantee the authenticity of the wines.
The portfolio comprises 9 champagne cuvées and two still wines:
- Grand Cru Champagnes: Including Barnaut Authentique Rosé (92/100), Grande Réserve (91-92/100), Blanc de Noirs (91/100), Blanc de Blancs Éclat de Chardonnay (91/100), Cuvée Edmond (92/100) and Millésime (93/100).
- Still wines: The prestigious Bouzy Rouge (red wine) and the rare Clos Barnaut Rosé, both under the Coteaux-Champenois appellation.
- Prices for the champagnes generally range between €25 and €45.
Visitors are welcomed in the boutique on Rue Gambetta (or Place André Collard) for personalised tours and tastings in a late 19th-century atmosphere. Visits are available in French and English and offer insight into the winemaking process, the galipes (fermentation tunnels) and the tasting of several cuvées.
