Champagne Michel Lenique is a small family house and independent winegrower in Pierry, a premier cru village on the edge of Épernay. Alexandre Lenique, the son of a cellar master, founded the house in 1768; the family has since passed the craft down through eight generations. In the 1960s Michel Lenique linked his first name to the brand; after more than fifty years he handed over to his son Alexandre.
Vineyards
The 6-hectare vineyard lies in Épernay, Mardeuil, Vauciennes, Vincelles and Verneuil, on north-facing slopes. Pinot noir from Vauciennes brings structure, meunier from Vincelles fruit and chardonnay from Épernay freshness. The estate practises viticulture raisonnée.
Approach
All the wines are made on the estate, with its own press and stainless steel fermentation tanks for each village. Old vines and reserve wines add richness to the blends, which age in 19th-century cellars.
Champagnes
The Michel Lenique line includes Les 3 Cépages, Noirs de Réserve, Blancs de Réserve, a Millésime, a Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs and an Extra-Dry; Excellence and Secret de Famille appear under the Alexandre Lenique name.
