Champagne Lombard is an independent family business in Épernay, founded in 1925 by engineer Robert Andrieu and now led by Thomas Lombard (4th generation, since 2017). The house describes itself as a "Maison Vigneronne", combining the traditional role of négociant with a strong, Burgundy-inspired focus on terroir expression.
History and Leadership
The history is marked by four generations: Robert Andrieu (founder), his son-in-law Philippe Lombard (1950-1975), Thierry Lombard (1975-2017) and current director Thomas Lombard. An important transformation took place in 2017, when Thomas Lombard changed course from broad blends to emphasising individual terroirs. Since 2022 the house's own vineyard has been certified organic.
Vineyards and Sources
The house has its own vineyard of approximately 6 hectares (sometimes cited as 5.5 ha), mainly located on the western side of the Montagne de Reims and classified Premier Cru. In addition, the house works with partner growers for a total supply of approximately 55 hectares, strictly selected for Premier and Grand Cru status. The grape varieties are mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
Winemaking and Philosophy
The core philosophy is to reveal the pure identity of the terroir without masking. This is achieved by:
- Producing exclusively Brut Nature (zero dosage) or Extra Brut champagnes.
- Using monocru and lieu-dit (site-specific) cuvées, comparable to the Burgundian approach.
- Long ageing in the historic cellars of Épernay (some dating from the 18th century), with an average ageing of 3 to 5 years.
- Ageing in stainless steel for cru expression and in wooden casks for lieu-dit cuvées to add complexity.
Champagnes and Ranges
The production is divided into three main lines, all based on Premier and Grand Cru:
- Signature: Entry-level range with six cuvées, including Brut Nature Grand Cru and Extra Brut Premier Cru.
- Terroir: Eight specific lieu-dit cuvées that highlight the singularity of places such as Verzenay (Les Corettes), Cramant (Les Bauves) and Chouilly.
- Millésime: Limited vintages, such as the celebrated 2008, which often achieve scores above 90/100.
The house is known for its mineral, fresh profiles and high quality ratings, with addresses for visits and sales in Épernay.
