Champagne H. Blin is a cooperative champagne producer based in Vincelles (Marne valley), founded in 1947 by Henri Blin and 28 other local winegrowers. The house is now run by Simon Blin, grandson of the founder, who represents the 12th generation of winegrowers in the region.
History and Structure
- The cooperative arose out of necessity after the Second World War, when winegrowers wanted to own a press themselves.
- The house currently brings together about 115 to 120 winegrowers who work together.
- The name Vincelles refers to the Latin vini cella, meaning "wine cellar", and marks the area as a historic centre of winegrowing.
Vineyards and Wines
- The estate covers about 110 to 118 hectares of vineyards, mainly located in Vincelles and surrounding villages.
- The soil is clay-limestone, which ensures slow ripening of the grapes.
- The grape varieties are distributed as follows: 70% Pinot Meunier, 16% Chardonnay and 14% Pinot Noir. Pinot Meunier is the characteristic variety of this area, known for its freshness and fruitiness.
- The cooperative practises sustainable viticulture (VDC) and has converted a considerable part of its vineyards to organic cultivation.
Winemaking and Style
- Winemaking is led by cellar master Sébastien Barbier, who determines the blend and profile of each cuvée.
- The champagnes are known for their low dosage (between 2 and 7 g/l), which emphasises purity and expression of terroir.
- Bottle fermentation takes place in March and April, after which the champagnes stay on the lees for an average of 2 to 4 years before reaching the market.
- About 450,000 to 500,000 bottles are produced annually, with a strong export position (about 50% of sales).
Main Champagnes
- H. Blin Brut Tradition: A classic blend, often dominated by Pinot Meunier.
- Blanc de Noirs 100% Meunier: An exclusive cuvée that puts the strength of Pinot Meunier in the spotlight.
- L'Esprit Nature Cépage Oublié: A 100% Petit Meslier champagne, a rare and forgotten variety.
- Cuvée Parcellaire: Selected cuvées from specific plots, sometimes fermented in oak barrels for extra complexity.
