Dom Pérignon is the prestige cuvée launched by Moët & Chandon in 1936, which today is a separate brand within the LVMH group.
- History: The champagne is named after Dom Pierre Pérignon, the Benedictine monk and cellar master of the abbey of Hautvillers. The brand name passed from Champagne Mercier to Moët in 1927, in connection with a marriage between the two families. The first vintage was 1921, released in 1936, when one hundred cases were shipped to New York. The bottle is a replica of an eighteenth-century model, a shape still used today.
- Approach and style: Up to and including the 1943 vintage, Dom Pérignon was made from regular Moët & Chandon vintage champagne. From the 1947 vintage onwards the wine has been produced separately from the start. Dom Pérignon is always a vintage champagne.
- Vineyards and terroir: The wine comes from a core group of vineyards in nine villages, including Hautvillers for Pinot Noir.
- Cuvées: Alongside Dom Pérignon Vintage there are Dom Pérignon Rosé and later releases such as P2 and Oenothèque.
