Champagne Delamotte, based in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Grand Cru, Côte des Blancs), is one of the oldest houses in the region, founded in 1760 by François Delamotte. The house has been owned by the Laurent-Perrier group since 1988 and is run by Didier Depond (since 1997), who is also responsible for the sister house Champagne Salon.
History and Ownership
- Early history: Originally owned by the Delamotte family, the house was run in 1828 by Nicolas-Louis Delamotte (Chevalier de Malte).
- Takeover by Lanson/Nonancourt: After the death of Nicolas-Louis in 1924, Marie-Louise de Nonancourt (sister of the Lanson brothers) took over the house, with the Lanson family taking control.
- Integration into Laurent-Perrier: In 1988 Delamotte was integrated into the Laurent-Perrier group, under the leadership of Bernard de Nonancourt.
Vineyards and Grapes
- Location: The vineyards are located exclusively in Grand Cru areas of the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims.
- Grape varieties: Mainly Chardonnay (from Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize, Cramant), complemented by Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier for the Brut and Rosé.
- Area: Approximately 80 hectares of vineyards.
- Harvest: Hand harvest with an average vine age of 40 years.
Approach
- Ageing: The champagnes undergo a longer ageing than legally required; the Brut ages for at least 30 to 36 months in the cellars.
- Production volume: Annual production of approximately 600,000 to 850,000 bottles.
- Philosophy: Emphasis on consistent quality, elegance and translating the terroir characteristics without the use of oak barrels or extensive yeast selection.
- Vinification: The first fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks; the remuage (turning of bottles) is still largely done by hand.
Champagnes (Cuvées)
The house produces four main cuvées, focused on Chardonnay: 1. Delamotte Brut: The best-selling champagne, composed of 55% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier. 2. Delamotte Blanc de Blancs: A Grand Cru of 100% Chardonnay from the Côte des Blancs. 3. Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Millésimé: A vintage champagne of 100% Chardonnay, which ages 4-5 years (or longer). 4. Delamotte Rosé: A blend of 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir (via the saignée method).
