Champagne Chartogne-Taillet is a récoltant-manipulant in Merfy, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry north-west of Reims.
- History: The wines of Merfy were already praised in the 9th century, in a letter from Bishop Pardulus of Laon. Fiacre Taillet, born in 1700, kept a diary on viticulture and winemaking. In 1920 Marie Chartogne married Étienne Taillet, giving rise to the name Chartogne-Taillet. Philippe and Élisabeth Chartogne took over in 1978; their son Alexandre has been responsible for the cellar and vineyards since 2006 and has run the whole estate since 2007.
- Vineyards and terroir: In Merfy the vines grow on clay and sand over chalk. Alexandre makes wines from individual plots such as Les Barres, Orizeaux, Heurtebise and Chemin de Reims. Les Barres is a plot of ungrafted Meunier, planted in 1952, on almost three metres of sand.
- Approach and style: Alexandre Chartogne trained with Anselme Selosse and was strongly influenced by him. He farms organically without herbicides and experiments with different fermentation and ageing vessels, including amphorae and concrete eggs.
- Cuvées: Alongside Sainte-Anne there are single-plot cuvées such as Les Barres (first made in the 2006 vintage) and Orizeaux.
