History
Champagne Breton Fils is a family business in Congy, founded in 1948 by Ange and Olivette Breton (the fifth generation). It began with just 5 ares of vineyard and 300 bottles a year; Ange Breton dug the traditional chalk cellars himself. The house is now run by Reynald Breton together with his wife Fatima and son Pierre, who ensure succession within the family.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate has 17 hectares of vineyards spread over eleven communes, including Congy, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Sézanne. The vineyards lie strategically between the Côte des Blancs and the Sézannais area. The terroir includes both Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites, which contributes to the quality of the grapes.
Approach
Breton Fils is a récoltant-manipulant (RM), meaning they have full control from grape to bottle. They practise reasoned viticulture (culture raisonnée) and harvest all grapes by hand. The champagnes are aged in the house's traditional chalk cellars, which they dug out themselves.
Champagnes
The house produces approximately 160,000 to 170,000 bottles a year. The range includes:
- Brut Tradition
- Blanc de Blancs
- Blanc de Noirs
- Rosé Brut
- Zero Dosage
- Brut de Brut
- Brut Prestige
- Demi-Sec
Visitors can book a tour and tasting in the cellars in Congy, often including an explanation of the dégorgement and labelling process.
