Champagne Autréau de Champillon is a family business based in Champillon (5 km from Épernay), where the family has been active since 1670. The original family of artists switched to winegrowing in the 1950s; Gérard Autréau started champagne production in 1953, followed by his son Eric and today his grandson Laurent. The three generations work together on more than 850,000 bottles per year.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate manages approximately 27 to 35 hectares of vineyards in prestigious areas. The grapes come from five different terroirs:
- Grand Cru: Aÿ and Chouilly.
- Premier Cru: Champillon, Dizy and Hautvillers.
The location on the right bank of the Marne offers a view of the valley and Hautvillers, the cradle of champagne.
Approach and Sustainability
Autréau combines tradition with modernity and is a member of the Magister network, which promotes sustainable viticulture. This means:
- Limiting the number of interventions in the vineyard.
- Using only environmentally friendly products.
- Long ageing on the lees (e.g. 36 months for certain cuvées) for complexity.
- Diverse blends of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, ranging from 100% Chardonnay (Blanc de Blancs) to dominant red grapes.
Champagnes and Recognition
The range includes non-vintage, vintage and prestige cuvées such as Les Perles de la Dhuy. The champagnes are characterised by balance, minerality and fruity aromas. Their quality is recognised with awards such as:
- Gold medal for Brut Rosé Premier Cru (Concours Mundus Vini).
- Silver medal for Brut Premier Cru (Concours Mundus Vini).
Visitors can visit the cellar and taste by appointment, with hospitality in English and French.
