History: Champagne A.D. Coutelas was founded in 1809 by Louis Victor Coutelas in Villers-sous-Châtillon (Marne Valley) and is now run by the eighth generation, Damien and Angélique Coutelas. The house has moved to Dizy and is known for its authenticity, with Damien adding modern elements without abandoning the traditions.
Vineyards: The family owns eight hectares of vineyards, including a plot in Villers-sous-Châtillon (since 1809), Vitryat (near Châlons-en-Champagne) and plots in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Blancs (Cramant). The soils consist of loam, marl and limestone, ideal for Pinot Meunier, while the old vines (at least 60 years old) in the Marne Valley produce Pinot Noir.
Approach: The house applies environmentally friendly practices (HEV certification since 2020) and uses, among other things, Norwegian seaweed as fertiliser for a salty minerality. They use wooden barrels (75hl) for micro-oxygenation and long ageing of reserve wines, and still tie the corks by hand with hemp thread (ficelage), a method from the time before the First World War.
Champagnes: The main cuvées are:
- 1809 Extra Brut: A vintage (2016) of 90% Pinot Noir (with Chardonnay), aged in wood and for 10 years in bottle, with a price tag that is characteristic of high quality.
- Louis Victor Fût de Chêne Extra Brut: Made with the Solera method in small oak barrels for complexity, more accessible in price.
- Vintage 2015: Awarded gold at the Vinalies Internationales 2026 and a silver medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards (93/100).
