Champagne Gosset, based at 12 rue Godart Roger in Épernay, is the oldest wine house in Champagne, founded in 1584 by Pierre Gosset in Aÿ. Originally a producer of still wines, the house switched to sparkling champagne after the development of the process by Dom Pérignon. Since 1994 it has been owned by the Renaud-Cointreau group, led by Jean-Pierre Cointreau.
Vineyards and Terroir
The house has 140 hectares of its own vineyards and buys in grapes from 30 different crus, including the prestigious Grand Cru areas Bouzy, Ambonnay and the Côte des Blancs. The main grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Production is about 1 million bottles a year.
Method and Style
The Gosset style is characterised by the complete avoidance of malolactic fermentation, which results in a wine with natural fruitiness, freshness and a soft acidity. The champagnes undergo an average ageing of four years on the lees, which contributes to complexity and fine bubbles. The house style also includes the use of an antique bottle (flacon antique), a design that has served as an emblem since 1760.
