Champagne A. Bergère is a family champagne house based in Fèrebrianges in the Vallée du Petit Morin, with roots going back to 1848. The brand name A. Bergère was officially launched in 1949 by Albert Bergère, who started production based on family vineyards. The estate is now managed by the fifth generation, including Adrien (oenologist) and Annaëlle, with André and Brigitte in charge since 1986.
The vineyards cover approximately 45 hectares (sometimes stated as 60 ha) spread over 139 plots in the Vallée du Petit Morin, the Côte des Blancs and the Sézannais. The vineyard is dominated by Chardonnay (up to 70%), supplemented with Pinot Noir and Meunier. The philosophy focuses on sustainable viticulture and the separate vinification of plots to maximise the expression of the terroirs, with champagnes characterised by elegance, purity and finesse.
The approach stands out for the use of native yeasts, the absence of filtration and fining, and the application of the solera method for certain cuvées to preserve old wines. The style ranges from accessible entry-level champagnes to prestigious Grand Cru and limited single-plot cuvées. Some notable champagnes are:
- Origine Brut: The classic blend (70% Chardonnay, 20% Pinot Noir, 10% Meunier).
- Blanc de Blancs Terres Blanches: A Brut Nature Chardonnay.
- Blanc de Blancs Solera: A unique cuvée based on the solera method.
- Les Clos: A limited, 100% Meunier Extra Brut from an old vineyard (1970).
- Petit Meslier Brut Nature: A rare single-varietal champagne from the rare Petit Meslier grape.
