Champagne Alain Vesselle is an independent wine house in Bouzy (Grand Cru, Montagne de Reims), founded in 1885. The Vesselle family combines tradition with modernity and produces both sparkling champagnes and the famous still red wine Bouzy Rouge.
History and Family
- The roots go back to 1885, when the ancestors of Alain Vesselle began winegrowing.
- Alain Vesselle launched his own brand around 1960 and was a pioneer in introducing modern technologies such as pneumatic presses and gyropalettes.
- After Alain, his son Éloi Vesselle took the helm in 1989.
- Since 2014/2015 his sons Guillaume, Antoine and Thibaud have run the estate, with each brother having his own cuvée.
Vineyards
- The estate covers 18 hectares of vines, spread over the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Bar.
- The vineyards in Bouzy are fully classified as Grand Cru (100%), particularly known for their Pinot Noir.
- The subsoil consists of chalk, which provides drainage and heat storage for the roots, essential for the quality of the grapes.
- The family devotes specifically 3 hectares to the production of the traditional red wine of Bouzy.
Approach
- The champagnes are known for their finesse, elegance and intensity.
- Great importance is attached to reserve wines, which ensure the continuity of the house style.
- The champagnes undergo prolonged ageing in the dark cellars, resulting in delicate aromas and fine bubbles.
- The house is certified for High Environmental Value (HVE) and bears the Vigneron Indépendant (Independent Winegrower) label.
- Visitors can enjoy an authentic tour with tasting, gaining insight into the history, pressing, ageing and the wine library.
Champagnes and Wine
- Cuvée Saint Éloi Grand Cru: A prestigious cuvée, named after the patron saint of blacksmiths, with a distinctive round bottle shape.
- Intrepides series: Under the leadership of Guillaume Vesselle there are special cuvées for the brothers, such as Cuvée Thibaud (exclusively Pinot Noir, extra-brut) and Cuvée Antoine.
- Bouzy Rouge: A still red wine from Pinot Noir, often aged in oak barrels, with aromas of red fruit and spices.
- Coteaux Champenois: The house also produces still red and rosé wines from the same Grand Cru vineyards.
- Prestige Rosé de Saignée: A rare rosé with an intense colour and rich expression.
