Champagne Météyer Père & Fils is an independent wine house in Trélou-sur-Marne (Aisne, Hauts-de-France), founded in 1860 and currently run by Franck Météyer (fifth generation) and his wife Anna. The estate specialises in the production of quality champagnes, combining its artisanal traditions with modern and ecological practices.
History and Ownership
- The Météyer family has deep roots in the region, with a history going back to 1860, when Pierre Clément inherited the vineyards.
- Since 1989 Franck Météyer has led the business, while Anna Météyer focuses on development and export, in particular to Poland.
- The estate has been named Vigneron Indépendant (independent winegrower) and in 2017 received the Prix Pierre Cheval de l'Embellissement from the UNESCO mission for the beautification of the Champagne region.
Vineyards and Terroir
- The vineyards cover approximately 14 hectares (some sources mention 12 ha) and lie on the southern slope of the Vallée de la Marne, along the Champagne Tourist Route.
- The grape varieties used are Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, with specific blends for different cuvées.
- The estate is certified according to the Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE) standards, which indicates that they apply environmentally friendly and sustainable viticultural practices.
Winemaking and Oenotourism
- The champagnes undergo a minimum ageing of 36 months in the cellars to develop depth and complexity.
- The estate offers an extensive oenotourism programme, including tours of the 18th-century cellars, the family museum and an art gallery.
- Visitors can choose from various tastings, such as the Évidence (standard tour and tasting of 3 cuvées) or the Exclusive (specialist tastings of signature cuvées).
Champagnes and Cuvées
The range varies from traditional blends to single-variety champagnes and specialities:
- Carte Argent: A golden blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay, awarded a medal at Decanter (2016).
- Cuvée Marine: A rare blend with 50% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir and 25% Pinot Meunier, packaged in a striking blue bottle.
- Exclusif: A gastronomic 100% Pinot Meunier with 10 years of ageing and zero dosage, known for its intense aromas.
- Monocépages: Single grape varieties such as Blanc de Chardonnay, Blanc de Noirs and Blanc de Meunier.
- Nuits Blanches: A 100% Chardonnay champagne.
- Expression Noir: A 100% Pinot Noir with a powerful and full character.
The champagne house is known for its authenticity, combining tradition with art (via the art gallery of Anna Météyer) and its commitment to environmental responsibility.
