Champagne Francis Orban is a fourth-generation champagne house based in Leuvrigny, in the Vallée de la Marne. The history begins in 1929 with Léopold Orban, the first to install a press in the village. His son Gaëtan grew the brand to 40,000 bottles a year, followed by Pol in the 1970s. Francis Orban took over the estate in 1999 and launched his own brand in 2007, with a focus on 100% Pinot Meunier.
The vineyards cover 7.5 hectares in Leuvrigny and Sainte-Gemme, located in the Vallée du Flagot. The terroir is ideal for Pinot Meunier (more than 90% of the area), with chalky soils for freshness and clay for fullness. Chardonnay (9%) is planted exclusively on chalk soil. The south-south-west exposure and different altitudes ensure optimal ripening.
The method emphasises authenticity and terroir. Francis Orban uses 50% reserve wine from recent harvests for his non-vintage champagnes to guarantee depth and character. Vinification respects the natural freshness of the Meunier, with harvest dates tailored plot by plot to ripeness. The house is known for its 100% Meunier champagnes, which combine freshness, elegance and nobility.
The champagnes include various cuvées:
- Brut Rosé: Fresh, fruity, floral and saline.
- Extra Brut: Balanced with fresh, juicy fruit.
- Extra Brut Rosé: Fresh and pulpy, suitable with seafood.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes (e.g. 2015, 2016, 2018) that emphasise the freshness of the year, often a blend of Meunier and Chardonnay.
- L'Orbane: A highly regarded cuvée, often 100% Meunier.
