Champagne Duchenes Bourgeois is an independent family business located in Villiers-Saint-Denis (Aisne department), specifically in the Marne valley. The estate is known for its round, fruity champagnes that are strongly rooted in their terroir.
History and Family
The house was founded in 1920 by the grandfather of the current winemaker. It is a rare example of a family business that has kept or even expanded its land over the generations, rather than letting it fragment. Dominique Duchenes Bourgeois currently leads the third generation of winegrowers, with his son Wilson assisting him in the business.
Vineyards and Terroir
The vineyards lie in the meanders of the Marne valley, on the slopes of Crouttes-sur-Marne. The estate covers roughly 5.2 hectares planted with the three classic grape varieties:
- Pinot Meunier: The dominant grape that gives the champagnes their characteristic fruity aromas.
- Chardonnay
- Pinot Noir
Method
Duchenes Bourgeois stresses respect for the terroir and the soil. The winemakers believe that a disturbed or over-worked vineyard does not reach its full potential. The blend is carefully managed to combine the fruity note of the Pinot Meunier with the elegance of the other varieties, often enhanced by ageing on the lees.
